The other day I was searching through my personal photos on my computer, searching for a particular photo from two years ago. Or was it three? Turns out it was actually from 5 years ago. I remember it so clearly....was it really from five years ago?!
As I took that 30 minute journey, thumbing through the years gone by, I couldn't help but notice my daughter getting younger and younger. In one particular photo from just two years ago, I kept thinking, "she looks so small..." She was 9 years old but the difference in how she looked then and how she looks now...she's a mini teenager today! How did that happen?! When did that happen?!
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had these thoughts. Those long days of staying home with a two year old are long gone. Bedtime snuggles and kisses have been replaced with a good night fist bump…maybe. lol!
Don’t tell my daughter I told you but her lovey, Eeyore, is still in her bed. He’s stuffed into a corner under pillows but he’s there. Only to be found when I change her sheets. He has a lot of wear and tear now but I remember when I purchased him. He was one of three on clearance at Babies R Us. I purchased all three. Eeyore, Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. My daughter was almost six months old and I thought, "Surely, she’s old enough for a lovey now." I bought all three, curious to see if she would gravitate towards one. She did, Eeyore! And she wanted him to go EVERYWHERE.
At one point, I received great parenting advice - buy another one, just "in case." But as it turns out, Eeyore, was one of a kind. I looked everywhere for a duplicate. And after much searching, we couldn’t find another one.
So we decided to implement some rules to help protect Eeyore. One of which was, he could come with us to the store but he had to stay in the car. Luckily, my daughter was eventually ok with these rules and I think this went a long way in helping to ensure his longevity. Sure, he had been misplaced a few times over the years but never truly lost.
All of this to say, Eeyore has been a staple in my daughter's life for many years and if there is anything from my daughter’s childhood that stands out as a singular symbol of it, it’s Eeyore.
This is why I am doing My Lovey & Me.
